Rumson is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States and is part of the New York Metropolitan Area. It is said that the borough’s name is derived from early settlers who bought the land from the Native Americans in exchange for some rum. But as far back as 1663, long before the area was officially named Rumson, Native Americans called it “Navarumsunk”. Over the years it has been shortened to “Rumson”, though sources also talk of a Chief Alumson as a source of the name.

Rumson School District – The Rumson School District serves the Rumson, NJ area by housing an elementary school and a middle school.

Oceanic Free Library – Today the Oceanic Free Library is one of New Jersey’s only privately-funded public libraries.  It continues as it did originally and remains wholly independent, supported by the generous donations of its patrons and the community. The library provides books, magazines, technology, and other resources to its community.

Rumson Fire Company – The Rumson Fire Company was started in September of 1905 when a small group of men met in the old school house that was located at approximatley the same place as the current firehouse on East River Road. Their charter was received on January 18, 1906.
